Welcome to the 5/6S Class page.
Here you will find important information about our routines, curriculum and general information. We will also keep you updated about the amazing activities we have been getting up to at school in our class blog which is at the bottom of this page – please scroll down to find out more.
Reading
- Reading continues to be at the heart of a child’s learning and at Ox Close we ensure that the children take part in a range of different reading activities.
- Children in KS2 access our Accelerated Reader programme. Children regularly borrow books from the library, take quizzes on them and progress through the reading scheme.
- The children all take a reading test to determine their reading ability at the beginning of each year. They are then given a ‘reading range’ and this tells them the area of the library that they can borrow books from. The range given is matched to their reading ability so that they choose books that they can read comfortably or provide more of a challenge.
- Once they have finished the book, the children take an online quiz. The scores children receive from the quizzes are monitored by class teachers. When they are regularly passing quizzes for the level they are on, the teacher gives them permission to move up a level.
- Lost books will incur a charge of £5.00.
Homework
- Your child will soon be bringing home a ‘Pick and Mix’ homework grid. The tasks are all linked to the theme of learning that your child is currently studying in school.
- The idea is that you do not need to complete homework every weekend – if you are busy one weekend then you could miss out that weekend and complete a task the weekend after – as long as they have the right number of points by the time stated on the grid
- Children will continue to receive a reading book – we ask that the children read a few pages every night wherever possible.
- Each week, the children will also have a spelling rule to learn. Rather than the old way of learning spellings for a test, we are going to send home a rule activity for them to complete and return. We are hoping this new way of learning spellings will help with retaining the rule.
Times Table Rockstars
Times Tables knowledge is a huge part of the curriculum and instant recall of times tables is essential.
In school, we have invested in an online programme that can be used both at home and at school, to support the children in learning their tables.
Times tables are set by the class teacher and we hope that every child will benefit from the programme by logging on both at home and at school.
PE
We will be participating in PE lessons outside (weather permitting) every Tuesday. Children should come into school in their full PE kit every Tuesday including suitable outdoor PE shoes. Earrings and watches should be removed before the lesson. After the initial 6 week period, all earrings must be removed and not covered with plasters. If children cannot remove their own earrings, please remove them before they come to school. Please make sure that your child has the correct PE Kit:
- Black shorts, white t-shirt and trainers
- No football or sports tops please!
- Tracksuit bottoms for outdoor lessons.

Class 5/6S Activities
March 2020 – Food Preparation Skills
It’s great to be back with everyone in the classroom. This week, we have continued with our DT work on ‘Global Foods’ and have been looking at Mexican dishes. Today, we have practiced a number of food preparation skills to make our own salsa and guacamole. Although we couldn’t try our finished product, we were able to demonstrate our de-seeding, crushing, chopping, dicing and juicing skills!
December 2020 – Reversible and Irreversible Changes
To round off our science work this half term, 5/6S have been learning about reversible and irreversible changes. We thought about adding heat to our starting materials (reactants) and looking to see if a new substance was made (product). We also thought about whether or not we can ‘undo’ the changes and how heat or the cold can cause changes to occur. December 2020 – Make your own bag!
Having investigated which type of paper was the strongest, the children used their findings to design and make a paper bag that could hold at least 8 apples. We had a lot of fun testing our final products, with four teams managing to hold up to 12!
November 2020 – Testing Materials
In Science today, we have been testing the strength of different types of paper by conducting some interesting investigations. We looked to see how many glass nuggets each type could hope and used our results to suggest a suitable material to use for a new supermarket fruit bag.

November 2020 – Finding Perimeter
Our Year 5 children have today started their work on measuring the perimeter of different shapes. Our problem solving activity was to use 16 square tiles to make a shape with the largest perimeter possible – take a look at us in action trying to find a possible solution:
November 2020 – Time Zones
This afternoon, we have been using our knowledge of Europe to work out the missing pieces in our map puzzles. Once we had refreshed our memories, we began to find out about the importance of time zones and how they affect our world-travel! If you yourself need a refresh, take a look at this helpful video:

As we continue with our French topic of all about ourselves, we are learning to write about what we are wearing in detailed sentences, using the correct verb form and pronouns. November 2020 – Sorting Materials
Today 5/6S started their new topic of materials with a recap of the properties of materials. We sorted photographs of a range of objects and their materials using tables and Venn diagrams, before thinking about how certain properties make a material suitable for a specific purpose. November 2020 – Comparing European Capitals
Continuing with our work on Europe, today we have used key data on rainfall and temperature to draw specific comparisons between a range of European capital cities. We have needed to look carefully at key information to see if we can begin to give reasons for the differences that we find. Here we are in action:

Today the children in 5/6S began their work on a secret Christmas project with the ‘Music Man’ himself, Brendon Renwick. They worked in two small groups to begin learning some special songs that will be heading your way soon…but not just yet! Wait and see!

November 2020 – M and M Productions
Despite the difficulties this year, the children in Years 5 and 6 were delighted to welcome back M and M Productions this year with their virtual performance of The Wizard of Oz. The new format was a great hit with everyone and we had a splendid afternoon!
November 2020 – Team Building

October 2020 – The Perfect Tense
Today Year 6 have been introduced to the perfect tenses – the past perfect and the present perfect. Each of these tenses has a past tense verb form and the use of have/has or had, which the children explored today. October 2020 – World Mental Health Day
To recognise World Mental Health Day 2020, the children in 5/6S have been finding out about positive affirmations and how these can be used to start the day off well. We looked at some examples and then came up with our own. We added these in Autumn colours to our class tree as a daily reminder of how we can turn a negative into a positive. Take a look!

Today we have been revisiting and consolidating our understanding of French numbers up to 100, as some of us missed out on this learning during lockdown. October 2020 – Perfect Portraits
Over the course of this half term, we have been concentrating on developing our sketching skills, particularly when drawing self-portraits. The progress that we have made has been fantastic, take a look at some of our finished work.
