Our School Travel Plan Action Group has the following objectives:

  • increase the number of pupils walking to and from school by 10%
  • increase the number of pupils cycling to and from school by 10%
  • reduce the number of cars parked by 20% along the front of the school

Our School Travel Planning Action Group promote a range of annual activities which are aimed at help us progress towards achieving our school travel planning objectives:

National Road Safety Week
During National Road Safety Week 2010, pupil representatives from our School Travel Planning Action Group:

  • Actively encouraged people to trial the voluntary one way system
  • Organised a whole school road safety poster competition

PCSO Sam Wardle kindly agreed to judge the road safety poster competition and also informally monitored traffic flow and parking along Ox Close Crescent throughout the week.

iWalk and National Walk to School Week
In October and May, the School Travel Planning Action Group actively encourage pupils to walk to and from school everyday. Pupils who do so receive special certificates.

Park and Stride
Also in October and May, the School Travel Planning Group actively promote our Park and Stride Scheme. Park and Stride’ is where parents park away from the school site and walk the remainder of the journey with their child. Consent has kindly been given by Mr. Colin Morgan for parents and pupils of Ox Close to use the Ash Tree Pub car park as the location from which we can ‘Park and Stride’ to and from school every day. The journey on foot from the car park to the school takes between 5-10 minutes. It is hoped that the scheme will help to minimise congestion from the front of the school and help to keep our pupils safer.

Y3 Pedestrian Training
In November, Year 3 pupils learn some very important road safety messages. Pupils are presented with certificates on completion of their pedestrian training.

Y5/6 Cycling Proficiency Training
Also in November, Year 5 and 6 pupils have the opportunity to take part in cycling proficiency training.

STARs (School Travel Awareness Raisers)
In 2009, we appointed two Year 5 STARs (School Travel Awareness Raisers), who regularly visited classes to promote crossing the road safely.

New Voluntary One Way System
Following extensive trials, consultation and meetings with representatives of the County Council and Police together with local residents, it has been decided to introduce a voluntary one way system past the school for parents and carers taking pupils to and from school. It will be implemented for the duration of the Spring Term, on a voluntary basis from Monday 24th January between the hours of 8.15-9.15am and 2.45-3.30pm.

The direction of the voluntary one way system is entering Ox Close Crescent from the Kingfisher Pub, driving towards Wood Vue, so that the school will be on the left, making it safer for children and reducing their need to cross the road. Pupil representatives from our school travel planning group will be actively encouraging people to adhere to the voluntary one way system and PCSO Sam Wardle will be informally monitoring traffic flow and parking along Ox Close Crescent.
